Another of the producer's 100$ whole-cluster fermented Syrahs, the 2023 Spiders From Mars is from the Ziggy Stardust Block at Elevation Vineyard, which sits near Bionic Wines Hors Categorie. Planted in 2011-2012 at 1400 ft. elevation at a 45 degree slope, the soils are fractured basalt with low soil and little water. The first vintage was 2016. picked extremely early, as the site sees bud break two weeks before the rest of the valley, it's pretty with power, extremely low in alcohol, floral, and totally unique. Black and white pepper, gravel, garrigue, it's all there atop a lithe, ethereal palate of wild elegance. Drink 2028-2038 - Virginie Boone

I love this David Bowie-inspired wine as much as I loved seeing Bowie pair up with Iggy Pop to perform "I Wanna Be Your Dog" when I was a senior in high school. That performance was dangerously close to perfect, as is this Syrah. The wine leads with a funky-earthy mix of dusty roadside blackberries and roasted pork shoulder rubbed with cumin. Blackberries and earthy oregano take over the palate, ably backed by frenetic acidity and graciously silky tannins. Ziggy Stardust reputedly could lick you by smiling. This wine doesn't even need to smile to win you over. - Michael Alberty
